SUMMARY:IITaV : "Coal: Past Present and Future" - By Dr Rajendar Gupta
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to have Dr Gupta\, Professor in Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Alberta giving us a talk on “Coal: Past\, Present and Future” at Ian Wark Theatre\, CSIRO Manufacturing\, (NEW VENUE – map) on Friday\, 15th Feb 2019\, 5.30pm – 6.45 PM. We invite you and your partner to join us for this event. \nCoal is the most abundant and widely distributed energy resource and is responsible for more the 40% global electricity production. However\, after industrialization\, environmental problem such as acid rains became a concern. Global warming and climate changes resulting from greenhouse gas emissions took the centre-stage after the historical meeting in Kyoto in 1997. \n \n\n Dr Gupta will take us through the scenario during  industrialisation through the period. He will describe in simple terms technologies that were adopted to reduce the smog and acid rain and sulphur based emissions and to the mitigation of greenhouse gases. Other alternate options like shifting to Natural gas and nuclear energy will also be discussed in the current scenario. \nOn global scene\, the coal use is still expected to increase until 2040 and then slowly decrease until we can have enough deployment of renewable energy resources. It is important to have clean coal technologies to have minimum impact on the environment and climate change. Dr  Gupta will go through some of these High Efficiency and Low Emission technologies for this transition period. He will also discuss the status of Carbon Capture and Sequestration necessary to limit the global warming to a 2 degree level. \n\nDr Gupta has conducted research in fossil fuel related areas including upgrading\, combustion and gasification and emission control for more than 35 years. He completed his BTech from IIT Kharagpur\, MTech from IIT Delhi and PhD from the University of Newcastle\, NSW. He has led several research projects on black Coal at the University of Newcastle and led Clean Coal theme at the University of Alberta. He has more than 300 research publications and presentations in national and international conferences. \nEvent Details:\nVenue:  Ian Wark Theatre\, CSIRO Manufacturing\, Central Reception\, Research Way (Bayview Ave)\, Clayton. 3168.\n(Enter from Gate 5\, Normanby Rd or from CSIRO’s Bayview Ave Gate) (Map)\nDate/Time: Friday\, 15th Feb 2019\, 5.30pm – 6.45PM ( Networking: 5.30-5.45pm; Lecture & Q/A: 5.45pm-6.45pm)\nRegistration: https://www.trybooking.com/BAQVD \nFor any queries\, please contact Divakar Prasad (0403438793) or Sarbjit Giddey (042 234 1379) or send us an email to mail@iitav.org.au. \nRegards \n\nIITaV Committee

SUMMARY:"Introduction to Deep Reinforcement Learning"\, By Prof B. Ravindran\, IITM on Thursday\, 24 August 2017\, 6.00 pm at University of Melbourne Carlton
DESCRIPTION:IITaV invites you to our August 2017 Networking Event to meet and greet Prof B. Ravindran of IIT Madras who is currently visiting Australia and hear about his work on “Deep Reinforcement Learning”. Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods have achieved significant successes recently by marrying the representation learning power of deep networks and the control learning abilities of RL. This has resulted in some of the most significant recent breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence such as the Atari game player and the Alpha Go engine from Deepmind. This success has opened up new lines of research and revived old ones in the RL community. In this talk\, Prof Ravindran will introduce the reinforcement learning paradigm and briefly review the progress made in deep RL. The talk will be accessible to an AI ignorant audience and will try to motivate the concepts through practical examples. \nDate/Time: Thursday\, 24 August 2017; 6.00 pm to 8:00 pm; nibbles and drinks will be served. \nVenue: Room PAR-Alan Gilbert-G21 (Theatre 1); Alan Gilbert Building\, University of Melbourne\, 161 Barry St\, Carlton VIC 3053\, Corner of  Barry and Grattan Street ( Map ) \nCost: Free event for IITaV members and guests \nPlease register by Friday 18th August to help us confirm the numbers. For any query about this event\, please contact:  Nikhil Kumar (0417 103 795) or Meenakshi Arora (0401 914 420) \n  Prof. Ravindran is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at IIT Madras. He has nearly two decades of research experience in machine learning and specifically reinforcement learning. He has held visiting positions at the Indian Institute of Science\, Bangalore\, India and University of Technology\, Sydney\, Australia. Currently\, his research interests are centered on learning from and through interactions and span the areas of data mining\, social network analysis\, and reinforcement learning. \nHe is the co-director of the Reconfigurable and Intelligent Systems Engineering (RISE) group at IIT Madras\, which has nearly 80 members associated with it currently. He also heads the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI at IIT Madras. \nHe is one of the founding executive committee members of the India chapter of ACM SIGKDD and is currently serving as the vice-president of the chapter. He has published nearly 100 papers in journals and conferences\, including premier venues such as ICML\, AAAI\, IJCAI\,  ICDM\, NIPS\, UAI\, ICLR\, and AAMAS. He has also co-authored the chapter on reinforcement learning in the Handbook of Neural Computation published by Oxford University Press. \nRegards\n \nIITaV Management Committee
