EWB is an award winning provider of innovative and engaging engineering education programs\, a DFAT supported provider of technical assistance programs to developing communities\, and a pioneer in developing and trialling innovative technical and market based solutions to solve problems. \n  \n\n\nEWB conducts field based programs with 6 Aboriginal communities\, and with a range of community partner organisations in India\, Sri Lanka\, Nepal\, Vietnam\, Cambodia and Timor Leste on issues relating to water and sanitation access\, renewable technology\, education\, sustainable infrastructure\, climate change and resilience\, and social entrepreneurship. The benefits of taking a collective impact based approach to work (i.e. the government\, community\, and private sectors need to come together to facilitate sustainable change for communities) and the role of engineers and scientists in such activities will be discussed. \n\n\n \nRasika Mohan brings over 10 years of experience in successfully delivering impactful programs in international development\, fundraising\, banking and finance\, and information technology sectors. She spent several years managing IT\, business and transformation programs at ANZ before taking off on a volunteering journey with EWB in 2011. Over the following year\, Rasika worked as EWB’s South Asia Field Officer and continued to volunteer with EWB upon her return. After a brief stint in the fundraising sector\, Rasika returned to EWB where she spearheads their work in the community development and social business space\, and strives every day to create shared value for the private and community sectors. Rasika has a double degree in finance and software engineering\, and a Masters in Environment (majoring in international development). \n\n\nPre- registration essential by 26 July 2015. This is an investment of over AUD$150M for oil seed crushing and refining and animal feed protein products. It is the single largest food and agri investment in Australia in the last 5 years. ROBE’s plant at Wagga Wagga is the second largest integrated operation in Australia in this sector. The ROBE project is in production since March 2013 and has reached its full capacity in March 2014.DD is a Chemical Engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Kanpur and a gold medallist from Indian Institute of Management\, Bangalore. He started his career with Unilever and has been both their Sales and Marketing Head for their mainline divisions. DD was the Vice President of one of India’s Top Ten Groups (Thapar Group) reporting to the Chairman. He started three Greenfield projects for the company including an Agribusiness of growing and processing gherkins in 1992 which has now become a global leader (employing over 200\,000 people) and the second largest export after coffee from the state of Karnataka\, India. He was the International Head and Chief Executive for Bakrie International\, a $15 Billion South-East Asian group.  He has set up the first Australian food joint venture in India in partnership with Unibic Biscuits. This world-class manufacturing and distribution facility exports products globally in conjunction with the Bradman Foundation. DD is a Director and a Promoter of Tree Top Plantations Pty Ltd which has the largest table olive growing and processing operation in Australia. The 1\,250 acres of olive groves are located near Griffith in NSW. \nRakesh Aggarwal \nRakesh is Managing Director of the Saurin Group. He graduated as an Electrical Engineer from Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University. He worked in India for Engineers India\, Britannia and IDPL before going to Saudi Arabia. He spent three years working for a Biscuit company till 1992. He migrated to Australia along with his wife Sunita and sons Saurabh and Rohin in 1993 and found a job with a dairy company. In 1997\, he left his job and started an engineering business. In 2001\, he bought a sick and closed down milk powder plant from his previous employer.\nThe plant at Langwarry Food Park was restarted in 2005 and the business has grown from nothing to $100M in seven years. A fire in 2012 caused a significant setback to Rakesh’s business growth but it has started growing again at 30% per annum.  The business was rated as the fastest growing private business by Business Review Weekly and has also received the award of Victorian Exporter of the Year 2011. \nSteve Bungay \nSteve is Director\, Envision I.T. Pty. Ltd.\, a leading software company that develops software for entrepreneurs\, SMEs and leading corporate businesses. In the past 10 years\, Envision IT has developed many award winning products. A recent accolade has been in making its client\, Jones Lang LaSalle win its product international acclaim. \nSteve completed his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering in 1986 from IIT Delhi. His first job was in products development in a public sector company in India. He later moved to the Indian Navy as Senior Design Officer and after about 2 years\, returned to the public sector. The stint in the public sector involved sales but his main contribution was to complete many major projects for Department of Defence and Indian Post. He operationalised the first LAN in the Department of Defence and installed 500+ POS terminals in Post Offices located all over India.  After a 10 year stint in the public sector\, Steve moved to the private sector\, joining Mastek as Business Development Manager. This started a career devoted to Software and Integrated Services business that brought him to Australia where he started Envision IT in 2002.

These events provide an opportunity for alumni to meet each other in an informal environment\, build their network and pursue their professional goals. April event: Individual Contracting About fifteen members attended the event held on Thursday\, 12 April 2012\, at Riversdale Hotel\, Hawthorn. The President of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs)\, Rod Smith\, also joined us for the evening. The theme was Individual Contracting (Freelancing). A member of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) – Albert Kalaja was invited as Guest Speaker. Albert Kalaja runs a well established\, highly successful recruitment and contracting company – Paragon Recruitment – and he is also a Charter Member/Past President of TiE Melbourne. Albert shared his experiences\, thoughts and advice on contracting. The message was quite clear: if you can accept the risks of contracting – uncertainty about the next assignment\, possibly some travel\, varying charging rates depending on the state of the economy – by all means go for it as it can be rewarding. However\, if one is looking for a steady (perhaps lower) income to manage a mortgage\, kids’ education and other commitments\, it may be a good idea to look for a permanent (as can be in today’s economy) position. A couple of our members – Sanjiv Bhasin and Steve Bungay\, who are entrepreneurs with established businesses in electronic instrumentation and software development respectively – also shared their experiences. Most attendees had something to share – ideas\, experiences and anecdotes. The group dynamics worked well and it provided us a good opportunity to get to know each other and understand how we could help each other – a key purpose of networking. June event: Entrepreneurship in the Digital Age The networking event held on Thursday 14 June had all the right ingredients: a venue at Swinburne University of Technology arranged by Prof. Ajay Kapoor (IIT-BHU Alumni)\, a formal discussion titled Entrepreneurship in the Digital Age by Dr David Gilbert\, Acting Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor & Associate Professor\, Entrepreneurship & Innovation\, RMIT and over 22 interested and lively attendees from IITaV\, TIE and Telstra. Prof. Gilbert noted that in this digital age\, the world of business has changed dramatically and entrepreneurs have to think of increasingly innovative ideas just to get noticed. In addition there is a significant shift from traditional businesses to grasp the online opportunity – these are established businesses that have a track record and greater access to capital and provide a competitive challenge. Moreover\, it has become obvious that the traditional business model needs to adapt to online opportunities\, not only by establishing websites but by exploring social media and e-commerce options. Our survey of attendees has helped us to identify and prioritise the following topics for future networking events: – Effective Marketing of Professional Services – Innovation at the Workplace – Dealing with Difficult Situations

SUMMARY:March 2012 – Holi Hungama event
DESCRIPTION:IITaV’s “Holi Hungama” program at Cinnamon Club in Cheltenham on Sunday 11th March had something for everyone – adults and children alike. Dr Behera\, Consul General for India in Victoria was Chief Guest. President of IITaV\, Professor Arun Kumar welcomed everyone and mentioned some of the achievements of the young organization during the past year. The entertainment included beautiful songs by IITian Radhey Shyam Gupta and his daughter Kokil. In typical Holi Hasya Kavita tradition\, the attendees were entertained by poems written and recited by IITian Subash Sharma who appeared all the way from Brisbane through a live video link. Chief Guest\, Dr Behera’s poems in English and Hindi were received with much applause. IITian Dr Nalin Sharda\, the excellent Master of Ceremonies\, also recited his poem to everyone’s delight.\nThe group were on their dancing feet with the help of Marshie Rajakumar of Jhoom Bollywood Dance Company. With Marshie’s expert training and suitably energized by “Rang Barse Bhige Chunarwa”\, the song made famous by Amitabh Bachan\, the IITtaV family quickly became a well synchronized Bollywood dancing troupe! Some of the motivation may have come from the fact that there was a prize each for the best performing male and female Bollywood dancer; these awards were won by Surinder Lamba and Amruta Shree Behera.\nA rendition of “Ben”\, a song by pop idol Michael Jackson\, presented by Aditya Chibber touched most people’s hearts. Not to be outdone\, a couple of “nextgen” IITians\, Aditi Ghuman and Nimeshika Singh\, took to the stage and made an impassioned appeal to include some activities for the younger generation to encourage them to keep coming to these events with their parents. Their proposal to form an IITaV Kids Committee was received with enthusiastic applause and encouragement.\nThe event ended on a sweet note with desserts and lots of networking. Committee member Dr Raj Rajakumar\, coordinator of the event\, thanked everyone for making the day a great success.
