IITaV : “Coal: Past Present and Future” – By Dr Rajendar Gupta

15 February, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm

We are excited to have Dr Gupta, Professor in Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Alberta giving us a talk on “Coal: Past, Present and Future” at Ian Wark Theatre, CSIRO Manufacturing, (NEW VENUE – map) on Friday, 15th Feb 2019, 5.30pm – 6.45 PM. We invite you and your partner to join us for this event.

Coal is the most abundant and widely distributed energy resource and is responsible for more the 40% global electricity production. However, after industrialization, environmental problem such as acid rains became a concern. Global warming and climate changes resulting from greenhouse gas emissions took the centre-stage after the historical meeting in Kyoto in 1997.

Dr Gupta will take us through the scenario during  industrialisation through the period. He will describe in simple terms technologies that were adopted to reduce the smog and acid rain and sulphur based emissions and to the mitigation of greenhouse gases. Other alternate options like shifting to Natural gas and nuclear energy will also be discussed in the current scenario.

On global scene, the coal use is still expected to increase until 2040 and then slowly decrease until we can have enough deployment of renewable energy resources. It is important to have clean coal technologies to have minimum impact on the environment and climate change. Dr  Gupta will go through some of these High Efficiency and Low Emission technologies for this transition period. He will also discuss the status of Carbon Capture and Sequestration necessary to limit the global warming to a 2 degree level.

Dr Gupta has conducted research in fossil fuel related areas including upgrading, combustion and gasification and emission control for more than 35 years. He completed his BTech from IIT Kharagpur, MTech from IIT Delhi and PhD from the University of Newcastle, NSW. He has led several research projects on black Coal at the University of Newcastle and led Clean Coal theme at the University of Alberta. He has more than 300 research publications and presentations in national and international conferences.
