A Legacy Since 1950
In the late 1940s, India emerged as an independent nation with a vision of equal opportunity and technological progress for all citizens. The 1948 Sarkar Committee report led to the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Technology to provide world-class technical education.
Starting with IIT Kharagpur in 1950, the IIT system expanded steadily over seven decades. Today, 23 IITs across India offer degrees in more than 37 disciplines spanning engineering, technology, sciences, humanities, and management.
IITs have become synonymous with technological and business excellence. Their graduates now lead Fortune 500 companies, found landmark startups, govern central banks, and direct global research institutions.
